General Season 3 Spoilers (in reverse order)

Excerpt from an interview with Amanda and Robin :
S-s-S-s-S
What kind of a journey would you say that your characters are on as the season progresses?
Amanda Tapping: It’s a bit of survival -- parts of the season feel really hand-to-mouth. After what happens when we come back in Episode 311, the show that will air on April 15th, it’s sort of blown Sanctuary world wide open, and so there’s a massive amount of hand-to-mouth survival. And we do a couple of really small, sweet singular episodes within that, but then we just kind of keep getting hit.
It’s not like there’s a huge progression or an arc that we’re following in the second half of the season. We revisit at the very end of the season what we’re dealing with in Episode 311, and certainly there’s evidence of it throughout some of the episodes. But there’s a lot of kind of singular - just getting whacked in the side of the head with a 2x4 episodes. So it feels sort of very instinctual and survival.
Robin Dunne: Yes. It’s a crazy ride, and you're going to see us in different times and in different dimensions and sort of how the impact that Magnus has had on history.
Amanda Tapping: Yes.
Robin Dunne: And it is really quite a wild ride. And it’s interesting too to be at this point talking about it, because the first half is really the lead up and the second half of Season 3 really is where things get crazy with Kate.
Amanda Tapping: It’s like at the end of the first half we have this massive explosion, and the rest of the season are the pieces falling out of the sky from that explosion.

SciFi Australia recently did quite a few video interviews with the cast and producers of Sanctuary and I've started a new page for video interview transcripts and will be including them as I get time. The first one is a long Q&A which has lots of general spoilers in it and rather than break out the general spoilers like I did the for the individual episodes I'll just link to the interview where you can read it in full (unfortunately the interview is geo coded so unless you are in Australia you are out of luck for viewing).

Excerpts -
Up until now, no one knew when to send a card to Helen Magnus, the 160-year-old leader of the North American Sanctuary.
Write this down, folks. Magnus' birthday is Aug. 27, the day before that of Amanda Tapping, who plays her in Syfy's "Sanctuary." (Tapping is much younger, but just as ageless as Magnus.)
"I got a cake that said 'Happy 160th,'" Tapping told me during my Sept. 2 visit to the Vancouver home of "Sanctuary." "Martin [Wood] came down with a cake and sang, 'Happy birthday Helen Magnus.' So we decided that her birthday is Aug. 27, which makes sense: She's a Virgo, very organized and über productive."
Magnus' birth date--Aug. 27, 1850--isn't the only piece of news I learned on set, but it's pretty much the only thing I can share with you at the moment. But keep reading for details and photos and video from my visit.
=========
Expect to see a lot of amazing FX and great stories this season. I'll have more from my set visit closer to the season premiere as well as sprinkled throughout the season. (I can't wait to show you the "how they did it" video for "Metamorphosis.")

Interviewer: So Season 3? Season 2 is here (uses hand to show a level) how much higher is Season 3?
Damian: Well I think it is higher because we introduce these villains who are amazing, desperate, dangerous, charismatic, funny, engaging, despicable and really revealing wonderful things about our characters past. We make a huge discovery at the end of episode 2 which changes the whole course of the season. It changes what we know about where monsters come from, it changes what we know of the history of the world and it's something that Helen Magnus is discovering in real time [muffled]. And that's what's cool, usually it's Will going "Oh my God! it's a thing" and she goes "Yes, and here's why you don't [muffled]" [laughter] Anyway, she's very knowledgeable and she's been around a long time so of course she knows a lot but we wanted to create a crisis, a discovery and something fascinating that's new to her that changes the game, that changes what she knows [muffled] that makes the audience go "wooo!" [muffled] this is all new and it effects the entire season.

Interviewer : Ryan mentioned to us that there's going to be more werewolf stuff this season and even some werewolf love, can you tell us a little about that?
Damian : Yeah, a little... there's a wonderful episode we did where Ryan's character Henry Foss makes a connection with the species that he is and there's some werewolf lovin' in that episode and ah that's something we wanted to do you know let's pull back the layers and let it all happen bcause it makes sense. It's a great episode for his character and also a great episode for Will's character because he's sort of part of it he's the one helping solve the mystery of what's going on in werewolf country. So yeah that's an example of the kind of show we can do, we can do these single episodes that really help bolster the background of our heroes and that's what 20 episodes gives you.
Interviewer : the character development that really helps the show work.
Damian : Yeah it does and I think that is what pulls people in. I mean people will show up to watch a high concept show once but they won't stay and repeat unless they really, really fall in love with the characters. You must service the... the stories must always service the characters, always.

Interviewer: So I want to begin by asking going into the 3rd season what can we expect from the show, from the characters, what's going on?
Ryan: A lot more, expect a lot more. The visual effects that Anthem are providing are just off the charts, they keep raising the bar every year, it's unbelievable this year. It's crazy, you know we were talking about earlier their effects are so good sometimes you don't know it's an effect and it's like, they're the unsung heroes.
As far as the characters are concerned with 20 episodes there's a lot more time to discover backstories about the characters. My character, Henry, has some great episodes, really great discovery episodes and you get to see a lot more of Henry as a werewolf this season. And you see a lot more of me, naked... you know we joke about me not having the luxury of magic denim shorts that just appear after I transform into a werewolf... I have to be naked.
Interviewer: Are you envious of the Twilight guys who get to have?
Ryan: The only thing that kinds sucks is that they kind of raise the bar when you have your shirt off and I'm like C'mon guys why can't you have like a fat, dumpy werewolf guy why do you have to be fit all the time? So ah there's that and a good excuse to eat better, um
Interviewer: Is tht going to cause any friction with Dr Helen as far as the werewolf thing?
Ryan: No, no, she's encouraged the werewolfieness discovery and so yeah I go get to go and find myself a bit and get a little bit of werewolf love. Maybe, possibly a little werewolf on werewolf emotional connection maybe, now I may have given away too much and I'll have to kill myself.
Interviewer: And you're also the tech guy on the show, right? So are there some super cool gadgets they give you to play with? What's that like?
Ryan: Yeah well our props department make these incredible, amazing gadgets for Henry and we still, there's still the running joke about Henry not having enough time to build these things so they only work most of the time and when they don't work it's really really bad timing for them not to work. You know I only had two hours to build the thing, what do you want!? So there's a lot more of that, Henry's gadgets maybe they work more often this year. A lot of gadgets have returned which is great. Some of our favourites are back and we've built some new gadgets this year.
A lot more exploring this year, a lot more, you know, heading out of the Sanctuary and making discoveries. We'd created this world by the end of season 2 where the Sanctuary is global there's a global Sanctuary network in London, Beijing, Sydney Australia we get to explore more of those which will be fun and some characters that you love are returning and some new characters that you are going to love and or hate are showing up. We're excited that there was an announcement made today that Polly Walker will be joining our cast for the second half of the season which we are very excited about. Polly's from Caprica and Rome and I had the pleasure of working with Polly on Caprica this season which is not airing until I think New Year so ah she's unbelievable, she's going to be so great on our show she's going to fit into our show so well.

Interviewer : And with the new character development that's going to come up this season and the stuff about the past, is that going to change the relationships she has with the other characters with her team mates is it going to maybe cause some rifts?
Amanda : No, everything deepens this year. Sure there are rifts because... the relationship between Helen & Will is interesting because as it has grown throughout the seasons it used to be very much boss and subordinate and now there's a levelling off. And because they're a lot more equal there's a nice combativeness between them. He's not afraid to call her on her stuff and she's not afraid to take it from him. You know there's, it's a much deeper relationship than it has in the past. So you see them go on this journey together and there's a huge amount of respect but there's also this "wait a second! I've been around long enough to understand that ..." I think it's very cool to me. Her relationship with Henry is definitely, we explore that a lot more this year, her relationship with Bigfoot, Kate becomes so much more entrenched in the Sanctuary family. We explore her [Helen's] father, her relationship with Tesla which has become flirty and fun, sort of you get why she keeps this guy around, not just because he is a genius but I think she really enjoys that relationship you know more than she wants to admit. So there's a lot of cool stuff and the characters I think for all of them you see Henry and Will so much more in step with each other it's nice.

Excerpts from the interview -
Interviewer: So let's talk 20 episodes
Amanda: 20 episodes is a very cool thing, we realise that had we only done 13 this year we'd be wrapped by now
Amanda: so now we go back and we shoot the back 10 which it feels like a big season now. We feel like big kids now, we get to wear long pants instead of shorts and we're big kids. But it just gives you so much more freedom and the luxury of having the time to tell these stories and the luxury... you know we didn't want to do a lot of... what we had done before was almost an anthology, like every episode was different and now we can tie them into a bigger story arc
Interviewer: So is it like a full season story arc or have you a couple of things going?
Amanda: There's a couple of story arcs that will playout through the season
Interviewer: Is there anything you can tell us about? Maybe guest stars or...?
Amanda: We have Polly Walker from Rome and Caprica, she's doing two episodes for us right now and potentially more. I'm really excited because I've never worked with her and I'm stoked.
Interviewer: Are you a Rome fan, Caprica fan?
Amanda: Yah, she's brilliant, beautiful. So yeah, I'm very excited. [jokes] I may bring in my Rome poster and ask her to sign it! We have an actor by the name of Ian Tracey who is a Canadian actor who is phenominal. He did a series called Da Vinci's Inquest and another series called Intelligence and he, he's sort of a blast from Helen's past. He stirs the pot in a very big and ugly way but what he also does is because of his arrival we are able to journey back in time and we show the early days of The Five back in the 1800's and early 1900's and we show the impetus of this group of young, arrogant scientists and how he fits into that and...
Interviewer: Well, you told me last year that you wanted to do more episodes where you get to go back and show Helen's early days
Amanda: Yeah and we've done it, it's called For King And Country and it's beautiful. I mean it's an epic episode and I think it will be one of the fan favourites of Season 3 to be honest. Because it does go back in time, and the present day as well and there's so much going on and the stories completely weave together and it's beautifully shot, really beautifully shot.
Interviewer: Well my favourite episodes is almost always the one where it's Will and Helen.
Amanda: And we haven't done that yet this year. We've done a Helen and this new adversary, played by Ian Tracey, and Robin and I have talked about that, we miss that, we need to do more.
Interviewer: Those are always really cool
Amanda: They are
Interviewer: because it's very close and it's usually more a head games kind of thing
Amanda: Yeah it's more cerebral and it gives you a lot more insight into the friendship and into what makes these two people tick. I love it.
--------------------------------
Interviewer: Alright last thing, are we going to see a lot of Henry?
Amanda: Yes
Interviewer: Are we going to see him wolfing out a little bit more?
Amanda: Yes, we actually have a beautiful Henry story that will take you a bit more on his journey and I'm really excited about it. It's a really nice story and it sort of the A story is what is happening with Henry and the B story is Helen and Tesla and it's a nice mix of an episode.
Interviewer: So Tesla's back too? All the favourites.
Amanda: Tesla's back, yeah, I think we have Jonathan for eight episodes or something like that

Excerpts :
"We survive the tidal wave, which is good," revealed Tapping of the cliffhanger ending season 2. "Because we have a 20-episode pickup, we have the luxury of doing really big story arcs this year, which is very exciting. So we have two major threads that we're pursuing throughout this season: one dealing with Helen's past a bit more, and one that is something that's much bigger than Big Bertha," the ginormous sea spider that plays a pivotal role in the season 2 finale.
-
As one of the show's producers, Tapping would like to explore more of the 'Sanctuary' backstory, so fans can expect that next season as well. "I'd like to see a bit more of Helen's history and the history of The Five, what shaped the Sanctuary network," she said. "We are going to be doing that this [coming] year. We're going to do a few historical episodes."

Also from the SciFiTalk podcast -
Tesla will be in 8 (&possibly more) episodes.
Tony: It's always good to see Tesla return on the show
Amanda: Oh we love him! We love Jonathon as a human being and as an actor, he just brings so much to the table. So yeah it's great to have him back and in Season 3 Tony we have him a lot
Tony: Oh good, good
Amanda: Yeah we actually managed to nail him down. He's a very busy theatre actor and he runs an incredible theatre company called the Electric Company and to get him for any extended time is pretty difficult because he is so busy but we managed to lock him down for eight and possibly more episodes this season.

Excerpts :
“In season one, my character, Will Zimmerman, was a guy who was sort of the eyes and ears of the audience. We were introduced to the Sanctuary through my character," he explained. "So it was great to play a character that was going through the same experiences that the audience were in discovering this whole new world. Since then, he’s become a guy who’s gone from being very sort of at a loss on how to deal with all this stuff to really being in charge or second-in-command under Amanda’s character, Magnus. So he’s really grown up a lot in this world, and I think that’s continued definitely through to season three. We’ve started to see the darker side of the character and that’s just going to keep coming out as season three progresses.”
-
Darshi gave some insight into what audiences can expect in season 3, which is currently being shot. “I really feel like the scripts are very challenging this year. It’s kinda taking things into a different direction," she said. "We have this huge discovery in the first two episodes that basically propels us throughout the entire season. I think the discovery is going to be pretty huge for the fans, and also for our characters as well…. This year, there are such big arcs that are so important. And this one storyline is really going to propel everyone. And everything.”

Excerpts from a Pop Culture Zoo interview with Amanda Tapping and Damian Kindler
PCZ: And so, going into this third season, you of course have seven more episodes to do. How does that throw your production schedule out of whack?
DK: Well, it’s a real champagne problem, right? I mean, it may play a bit of havoc with the production schedule and all that, but you get to tell some very deep, longer stories, and setup stories, and get some interesting character and story arcs into the show, finally, that make more sense to do with twenty than we could do before with thirteen.
AT: It just means that we have to take more vitamins. And eat better.
(laughter)
PCZ: Well, I’m assuming, too, much like Stargate, they’ll [Syfy] probably split your season and give you a little bit of a break to catch up.
AT: Yeah, I think we’re going to take a wee bit of a break in the summer for at least three weeks..
DK: You will!
AT: I will; Damian will be writing! But as a little hiatus, just to give post a chance to catch up and give our crew and cast a chance to catch their breath.
PCZ: So does that give you, like you were saying, more freedom to kind of develop more subplots and maybe an ongoing arc or two for the season?
AT: Absolutely! Absolutely, and we’ve talked about sort of the bigger picture for this year. It’s such a luxury, to be given the twenty episode order and it’s such a gift. So it does give us the opportunity to spin out a much bigger backstory for a few of the characters.
DK: Yeah, to play some ongoing mystery, to bring them some bad guys who don’t just come in, we tangle with them and then they leave or die. They come in and a master plan is revealed over a few episodes. We’re setting up two very interesting story arcs over season three, that I’m not sure how they’re going to resolve or if they will resolve. But they are designed to essentially challenge and torture our heroes and thus our audience. Hopefully in a good way!
AT: (laughs) Oh God!
PCZ: Well it almost makes me wonder, too, towards the end of the season especially with the in-fighting within the Sanctuary network, if Helen sort of sees at this point that she can almost walk away from this and go somewhere and live a quiet life for however long she has.
AT: There’s definitely a sense of that, but again, she’s too much of a control freak. She gave up everything for this, and now including her daughter. So I don’t think she would, although there’s a part of you that goes “Just walk away,” I don’t think she ever could. She lost literally the most important thing in her life for this quest and so she’s not gonna walk away. I think to leave it in the hands of people that she doesn’t trust would be such a slap in the face to her father and his legacy – in that sense she’s incredibly loyal.
PCZ: The other kick to the gut is you guys go and take Tesla’s vampire powers away, and he’s just a normal guy now. Although, he may have magnetic powers, apparently.
AT: Exactly! Don’t ever count out Tesla! And we hope to see a lot more of him this season.
DK: We adore Jonathon.
AT: We adore Jonathon Young. We adore the character he’s helped build. Yeah, don’t count Tesla out yet.
DK: Don’t count out the power, the power of the character isn’t the vampirism, believe me. It’s in absolute arrogance. He’s a genius. And his vulnerability, which is somewhere in there. That Jonathon plays beautifully. And his love for Magnus…
(brief pause)
DK: Oh! I just gave something away!
AT: Oh, dammit!
DK: And the fact that he’s pregnant…
(laughter)
PCZ: Excellent! Also in season two you’ve really opened up the universe that these characters inhabit. We saw the London Sanctuary, we’ve seen several other Sanctuaries. Is that a kind of growth direction that we can look forward to in season three?
DK: Yeah.
AT: Definitely, I mean once we’ve opened up the global network, you’ll see it. We don’t want to become so far stretched that we lose home base, so having explored out, and knowing there’s Sanctuaries in Mumbai, and Tokyo, and London, and Cairo, etc. etc., there may be a bit of a shift inward for awhile, to sort of focus on what’s going on at home. Now that we’ve shown you what’s out there we need to come back in and revive that home base.
PCZ: Now did you have a rough idea of how you were going to resolve the season finale from season two?
DK: I knew exactly what we were gonna do to solve that tidal wave giant spider problem! I really thought I’d just be flipping burgers at that point, I thought after the Bollywood dance, the spiders that make earthquakes I’m never working in any town again ever. So when we finally got back together, we were like, “This is great!” We got the show going and then everyone looked at me and said…
AT: Okay, genius, get us out of this one!
DK: “…what kind of insane corner did you paint us into? We are all clinging to the edge of this rock that you put us on!” The person who hates me the most is Alan McCullough, our co-executive producer, who is actually writing the season premiere. I wouldn’t take on such a dangerous job. He’s writing it and I think it’s going to be an amazingly cool episode. It’s actually a two parter!
AT: Yeah, we’ve ended up sort of turning it into a two-parter. I mean just sitting in the room when all the writers got back, and we’ve got a couple new writers this year, sitting in the room and sort of thinking about the logistics of the speed of a tidal wave, and the physics of a tidal wave. The discussions have been very intense, but they figure it out and it’s neat!
DK: It’s cool! When in doubt, another dance.

Interviewer : Excellent
Amanda : it actually gives us the ability to do bigger story arcs this year. So we have a couple of major threads that we will be pursuing. Um I don't think that I'm giving anything away when I say we survive the tidal wave
Interviewer : great. That was a great finale
Amanda : It was an awesome finale wherein we went "What if we get picked up? How the hell do we get out of this?". Which is what we are shooting right now. So it's very clever.
Interviewer : ????
Amanda : We started shooting Monday, yesterday it was our first day.
Interviewer : Do you know when you are coming back yet?
Amanda : October, we'll be in tandem with SGU
Amanda : We'll be doing a little bit more of the history this year, the history of The Five and how that all started. We actually find something really quite remarkable, you think Big Bertha is the be all and end all of... but we find something much bigger.
Amanda : I don't think that Will and Helen could ever. [shakes head]
Interviewer : you have chemistry but
Amanda : we have amazing chemistry and I think what's beautiful about it is a really genuine friendship and I think that hopefully that'll prove that men and women can be friends without all this weird tension all the time. I think that they flirt with each other in a very innocent way.
Interviewer : and you're going to be on Universe too I hear
Amanda : I did the pilot last year and I think the second to last episode.
Interviewer : ???
Amanda : and I never get to play with any of them, I mean they have a great cast and I'm stuck on my spaceship.

SANCTUARY Amanda Tapping: "I think what 20 episodes [the number ordered for season three] allows us is the ability to do a bigger story arc. So we have two major threads that we're going to be pursuing this season. Last year, it was like an anthology, and now there will be much more of a common through line. We get to bring back Tesla. We get to really dig into stories. And we get to go back in history."

… ON WEXFORD AND SANCTUARY
“I come back next week to start on Sanctuary, reprising the role of Wexford. I’m heavily in the first two episodes and we’ll see where it goes form there.
“He’s a lot more evil than I thought he would’ve been. I don’t know where they’re going. I went to a couple of conventions. I was in Europe in January. People were like, ‘I love your character but I hate him.’ It’s a really fun character.
“Martin Wood and Amanda and Damian Kindler, and Christopher Heyerdahl … It’s like an extension of Stargate, to a certain degree. A lot of familiar faces and great folks. I’m really enjoying working on it. It’s a really fun character to play. It’s always fun playing the villains.
“You have the prosthetics and the contact lenses, which [compared to Beckett] are a whole different kettle of fish to deal with. That presents challenges. Sometimes you don’t know what you’re doing, because you can’t see or focus fully. You’re hoping everything’s working out well. It seems to be going well.
“I was very happy with the final two episodes last season when Wexford took over for Amanda Tapping’s character. The production value on it’s really good and the special effects are amazing, I think.

Excerpts from a CinemaSpy interview with Damian Kindler
CinemaSpy: Can we expect to see more characters in future episodes like Tesla and James Watson that were inspired by Victorian literature?
Damian Kindler: In Season 3 we're very much wanting to go back into the history of Magnus. There's such a huge amount of unexplored territory and ideas that we want to go back to. A show like ours you have to kind of do in phases. The first phase was introducing the situation. And then, [introducing] characters and getting down to the basis of what they do and how they do it and why. Then I think once we've got all that set in stone like we did in Season Two — what monsters we hunt and why and how our characters interact — we can start to get into the characters' back stories. Of course, with Helen Magnus that becomes an amazing [thing] but also a big opportunity for Will as well. There's so much we don't know about these characters and so much we've hinted at. So I look forward as the series continues to really getting into that. But in Season 2 it was really just getting down to the business of dealing with local and global threats and running a sanctuary.
CinemaSpy: You said recently that in Season 3 there might be more of an arc for some of the characters. Can you say a bit more about that?
Damian Kindler: Nothing I want to say on the record to be honest because I don't want to be held to it. I think we definitely want to get into all of the amazing moments of history that Helen Magnus witnessed and what was going on behind the scenes; some really cool revisionist history moments. And with Will we really want to play into where he came from, how his mind works, what his world is like and what his family is like. I'd like to get into some of that. That's what I would look for as the series unfolds further.

Excerpts from a Clique Clack interview with Amanda Tapping
RT: And we’ll see more of Tesla this season and next season?
AT: Oh, definitely. Definitely. Jonathan’s a huge part of the family, so we want to bring him back as often as possible. He’s such a wonderful actor, and the character—he’s such a great antagonist. So, definitely.
RT: The first one is from Annie. She wants to know if there will be an overall story arc for season three or if there will be mostly stand alone episodes.
AT: I think the beauty of getting a third season and getting 20 episodes is that we get to play with a huge story arc. I think it’s in our best interest to build the mythology of the show, to do exactly that. I mean, that was part of the thing that made shows like Stargate so interesting to me was there was this massive, woven mythology. So it’s definitely—I mean, we do stand alone episodes because they’re fun and they’re exciting little pops throughout the season, but I think there definitely has to be an arc that carries us through. We haven’t figured out what that is yet. [Laughs] But we’ll have to pretty darn quick!
