"It's a rather unexpected view of these two people," Amanda Tapping told me earlier in the season. "Magnus is much more vulnerable and kind of freaked out than you've ever seen her."

"Out of the Blue" (9 p.m. June 13, Syfy; *** out of four), like many of the best "Sanctuary" episodes, focuses mostly on Helen (Amanda Tapping) and Will (Robin Dunne), who are feuding neighbors on a tree-lined suburban street.
Unlike in past two-handers such as "Next Tuesday" and "Requiem," other characters appear in the story and also are used in unexpected ways. Abby (Pascal Hutton) is the dutiful wife of Will, who is a successful cardiologist. Druitt (Christopher Heyerdahl) is the mayor who has a past with Helen, a successful artist.

To film the episode, which was written by Kindler and directed by Wood, the cast and crew used a lush street of homes for location shooting, and filmed with a different lighting style than before.

The ending of "Out of the Blue" plants the seed for all the action in next week's Season 3 finale, "Into the Black," which Tapping says ties back to the Hollow Earth storyline from earlier in the season.

Tapping is on the telephone to discuss the final two episodes of Season 3, "Into the Blue" and "Out of the Black," which will air on June 10 and June 17, respectively.
"Once again 'Sanctuary' paints itself into what seems to be an impossible corner to get out of," Tapping said, laughing softly. "When we got the pickup for Season 4, we were like, 'Aha, how are we going to get out of this one?' At the end of Season 2, a tidal wave was heading toward Earth, and, at the end of Season 3, we have no idea where we are or what will happen.
"Our story line about Hollow Earth plays very big.
"There's a huge insurgence that happens, which the Sanctuary team has to deal with. The government has become more involved than we've ever wanted them to be, and Magnus finds herself in the most ridiculous and unexpected place.
"So the start of our fourth season has all been about, 'How do we quell this uprising, and how do we get Magnus back?' " Tapping said. "I think the only way you can creatively continue is to scare the crap out of yourself and try to do something that everyone says is impossible. That's how we've always rolled."

PCZ: Will she meet the curse?
AT: No, you’ll see her again. We see her in episode… 319? Our second to last episode, she’s in it in a really cool way. And she’s already been in once this season, and is back again…
RD: Yes, definitely there’s one coming up that she’s gonna be in.
AT: Yeah, so you’ll see her again. Pascale Hutton is her name, and she’s wonderful. We love her.

Excerpt from podcast -
Amanda: and then our last two episodes, Out Of The Blue is a really interesting episode psychologically for us. It's Will and Magnus in kind of altered states and how they try to get out of it but it's a very cool look, it's a totally different side of Will and Magnus. And what I loved about it was that it felt like playing a totally different character. It's the kind of thing that I love about doing sci-fi, you can travel forward and back in time and you can do alternate reality stories and they make total sense.
Diane: It's not just the big special episode it's...
Amanda: exactly. Yeah! It makes sense. But again it all ties into this Hollow Earth story line

Excerpt from an interview with Amanda and Robin :
Is there anything that really surprised you coming up about your character that you weren’t expecting or that happened earlier in the season?
Amanda Tapping: We had a cool episode towards the end of Season 3 that shows you a different side of our characters, and it’s a rather unexpected view of these two people. Magnus much more vulnerable and kind of freaked out than you've ever seen her, and...
Robin Dunne: It’s like many episodes of Sanctuary; kind of unrecognizable but in a very different way. I think you could even say that the characters themselves -- Will and Magnus -- are - don’t even recognize themselves. And it was a really interesting episode to shoot. Completely different location. The lighting. Everything looked like a totally different show and it was very interesting to shoot.
Odd in a way because you're playing the same character but in a completely different realm. And yes; it was exciting. That’s coming up - what number is that? That’s...
Amanda Tapping: 19.
Robin Dunne: ...19.

The core of the Sanctuary story.
Those characters Will & Magnus are really the heartbeat of our baby and when we're telling stories that are really just about those two, we're very precious and that's what episode 19 is. Episode 19 is almost a two hander, it's a four hander but it's completely out there. I think we'll get a lot of hate mail about it, I think some people will go this episode touched me in an awful way and some people you know you jumped the shark, you shat the bed, whatever this isn't a Sanctuary, where's the monster, where's the Sanctuary, who are these people? I hated them. But I think that it's one of the most beautiful explorations of what our characters aren't, episode 19. And I loved writing it and I will definitely go on record and say that a lot of people, the networks and some other people, did not understand the script.
